Throughout my work in urban design and placemaking, I seek to dismantle what I refer to as keynote smartness — the tendency toward performative strategy detached from lived reality. Instead, I favour an unassuming, adaptive approach, working closely with the actors genuinely embedded in shaping a neighbourhood and its outcomes. I hold little faith in purchased one-offs or activations unmoored from context. When you engage real actors, producing real programming for real communities, the results speak with a corresponding authenticity.
We invited Alexandra Karpilovski's solo exhibition, Plastic Productions' live performances, and Finn Ahlgren's furniture installations to converge on Torsgatan in Stockholm, each operating independently within a shared urban canvas. There was no curated theme, no imposed narrative. We simply identified practitioners who needed room to work, and provided it. What emerged was fragmented yet vitally alive: dreamscapes coexisting with performance coexisting with object. the street momentarily recast as a site where divergent modes of thinking could occupy the same space simultaneously. It speaks to a quiet paradox at the heart of meaningful cultural work: it surfaces most authentically when no one seeks to control it. Our role was one of recognition and restraint, to discern who belonged, then step aside.
